Pilgrimage to Lourdes, Fatima & the Marian Shrines of Spain

At the most renowned Marian shrines, Lourdes and Fatima, Our Lady appeared and asked for prayer and penance, offering in return her maternal love, powerful assistance and constant protection to those who responded to her plea to stop offending God.

2017 marks the centenary of the Fatima apparitions and, worldwide, many pilgrimages are being organised to celebrate this upcoming landmark and, even at this late stage, to fulfil Our Lady's requests for penance, for the daily recitation of the Rosary and for the Five First Saturdays of Reparation.

A pilgrimage is a personal journey to a place of religious importance and may be undertaken for any number of reasons examples of which may be found in both the Old and New Testaments. Abraham, for instance, because he roamed the earth whilst looking towards heaven, his true homeland, is regarded as the model pilgrim. Similarly, Jacob's return journey to Bethel was a pilgrimage of gratitude to God both for the divine protection and for the favours he had received. A pilgrimage of petition was made to Shiloh by Hannah, the Prophet Samuel's mother, to beg God for a son, while David undertook his pilgrimage as reparation for his sin. It is not at all surprising that since, in fulfilment of their religious obligations, the Holy Family and the Jews, in general, made annual pilgrimages to Jerusalem, that Christians likewise would embrace this natural and fruitful practice by undertaking a personal journey to their own sacred places.

Pilgrimages, the Catechism of the Catholic Church tell us, "evoke our earthly journey toward heaven and are traditionally very special occasions for renewal in prayer. For pilgrims seeking living water, shrines are special places for living the forms of Christian prayer 'in Church'." (1674) Our Marian Pilgrimage for 2017, the Fatima centennial year, presents us with an opportunity to encounter this "living water" in Lourdes and Fatima, two places especially sanctified by the appearances of Our Blessed Lady.

Our pilgrimage, therefore, should be a journey of faith wanting to increase faith and trust in God; of prayer that desires a deeper and more intimate union with the Holy Will of God; and of a love that yearns for a deeper mutual indwelling with God. Consequently, we approach the sacred places as penitents not visitors, as humble petitioners seeking an increase of faith, hope and charity, rather than hunters of miracles and signs and, as pilgrims not as tourists.
