Alexandrina Maria da Costa (1904–1955) was left paralysed as a young woman and spent some thirty years confined to her bed in this village in northern Portugal. She offered her sufferings for the conversion of sinners and, for the last thirteen years of her life, is said to have taken no food but the Holy Eucharist.
She asked that the world be consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, which Pope Pius XII did in 1942. St John Paul II beatified her in 2004. Her tomb is in the parish church of Balazar.
