Lúcia dos Santos, the eldest of the three Fátima visionaries, entered the Carmel of St Teresa in Coimbra in 1948 and lived there as Sister Maria Lúcia of Jesus and of the Immaculate Heart until her death in 2005.
The convent keeps her memory with a small museum on her life and the message of Fátima. In 2023 the Church declared her Venerable. Coimbra is also one of the oldest university cities in Europe.
