In the thirteenth century a consecrated Host, taken from church and hidden away, began to bleed. It has been venerated ever since in the Church of the Holy Miracle (Igreja do Santíssimo Milagre), making Santarém one of the oldest Eucharistic shrines in Europe.

The relic is kept in a monstrance above the high altar. A visit here, on the road from Lisbon to Fátima, sets the Eucharist at the start of the pilgrimage.
