Between 13 May and 13 October 1917, Our Lady appeared six times to three shepherd children, Lúcia dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto, at the Cova da Iria. She asked for the daily Rosary, for penance and reparation, and for devotion to her Immaculate Heart. On 13 October a crowd of tens of thousands witnessed the Miracle of the Sun.

Pilgrims pray at the Chapel of the Apparitions, built on the spot where Our Lady appeared, and at the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, where the three visionaries are buried. Francisco and Jacinta were canonised at Fátima on 13 May 2017. Each evening the Rosary is prayed in many languages, followed by the candlelight procession.
