St John Vianney was parish priest of the small village of Ars for more than forty years, from 1818 until his death in 1859. Penitents came from all over France, and he often spent up to sixteen hours a day hearing confessions.
His incorrupt body lies in the basilica beside the old parish church. Pope Pius XI declared him patron of parish priests in 1929.
